And, most importantly, this process does not mess up a nice clean slot or require drilling and plugging a hole from the underside of your board which would ruin the appearance of a beautiful board. I made several boards this way and they went together quickly. This process was very simple and worked fantastic for me. If the rod does not easily go through wire loop you can always put the washers back in the slot and give a few more taps. Third, position the wire loop vertically down into the hole divot (roughly in the middle of the kerf where the washer made the divot you just created), hold the wire vertically and push the rod through the loop of wire. This creates a rounded divot roughly in the center of the bottom of the hole where the rod comes through. ![]() Hold the hardwood (protects your board in case you accidentally miss the washer on a tap, LOL) on top of the larger washer (which protrudes about the kerf slot) and tap lightly a few times. Find a small scrap piece of hardwood and grab a hammer. A picture would be worth a thousand words here, but I think you get the idea. ![]() The curvature of the large washer is resting in the bottom of the hole where the hole was drilled. The 2 smaller washers are merely to keep the larger one roughly centered in the kerf without being on one side or the other of the kerf. Put the 3 washers in the slot over where the hole comes through the kerf. "Sandwich" the large washer between the two small ones (the total thickness of the three washers stacked together should be a bit less than the kerf width of your slot). The other two are less than 3/8" in diameter. One is ~.625" (5/8") in diameter and obviously is greater than the kerf depth, which you want it to be. ![]() Second, I found three washers in my misc. This ensures a nice fit when it is installed and minimizes the space required for the wire loop to easily go over the rod. This ensures it will fit easily when the rod goes through it in the slot. I thought about it for a bit before I tried to perform my wire loop install over the rod and I developed a quick and simple solution.įirst, with the rod OUT of the slot put the loop end of the wire which will go over the rod, using a pair of needle nose pliers CAREFULLY shape the wire around the rod so it contours the rod, especially where the bottom of the rod will go through the loop. Some people scratched the slot with an awl, used a Dremel to widen the slot, and some others drilled a hole from the back to access the area where the wire goes over the slot and then plugged the hole.
